If you are lucky enough to have no problems with a car bought from a used car dealership, a glowing review is meaningless. How you are treated by that dealership when there is a problem, is more relevant. The review given by Michael of his experience with Howard Johnston Cars is similar to our experience. Without going into great detail of the horrendous experience we had with Howard Johnston Cars, I would simply strongly recommend that, should you buy a car from them, you educate yourself on the detail of the Consumer Rights Act 2014. Howard Johnston Cars will argue that your legal advice (obtained from the Citizens Advice Bureau Legal Department) is incorrect. They will dig their heels in and hope that you will run out of steam and just go away. We did not go away. However, it took a lot of determination and submission of paperwork for commencement of legal action, before Howard Johnston Cars were prepared to comply with the law and refund our money. Avoid them like the plague.
I gave Howard Johnson Cars my parameters - age, mileage, price range - and Peter showed me two cars that matched my specification. There was no pressure to buy or any attempt to steer me to something more expensive. I liked the 3 year old Ford Fiesta. The price was clearly marked and reasonable. I bought the vehicle and Peter was extremely helpful arranging registration and insurance. I would certainly buy from them again.
I bought a Ford Focus Estate from Howard Johnson Cars in June. I originally got Michael. He was very friendly and helpful. As I'm based in Ireland I requested someone from the RAC to go to test the car, they had no problems with this and helped him out as best they could. There was nothing wrong with the car apart from some wear and tear as usual. I was happy with this and paid for the car through a number of payments. Michael went on holidays through the transaction as it took a few days an Peter took over. Peter was also extremely helpful and patient with me throughout the process. I was originally going to travel over myself to collect the car but then found a company who would transport it for the same costs. Unfortunately, they got delayed multiple times and didn't collect the car until a week after they agreed to but Peter and the team were very accommodating and were offering alternative methods to help me retrieve the car. Eventually when I got the car I was not disappointed. The car was amazing and as described. Would definitely commend Peter and Michael throughout the transaction and for their help. Highly recommended!!

I purchased a used Skoda Superb from Howard- Johnston Motors and was really impressed with the presentation of their cars and the level of service I received. Peter Howard- Johnston the proprietor along with his team of salesmen do a fantastic job of meeting customers needs. I have been buying cars since 1973 and this is one of the best experiences I have had. Compared with the big multiple car dealers they listen to the customer and meet their needs. Their attention to detail is superb. Some of the big chains do an American style sales pitch which is designed to give maximum profit at the expense of the customer. Howard - Johnston gives good old fashioned service and puts the customer first. I will use this company again without hesitation.
It's a nice looking showroom and Raymond at Howard Johnston Cars Ltd is a very welcoming person. He was also very helpful as regards to securing the car. There was quite a few cosmetic issues with the car that were to be remedied before taking it away but these were not resolved. A lot of tiny marks on the paint work and also on the interior. They simply polished the car and spray painted the door handles on the inside. The previous owner had damaged the door interior with their jewellery. Also the steering was off by a good bit and rattles coming from the boot. This took 3 months to rectify with me having to drop the car in on numerous occasions and take a Fiat 500 as a courtesy car. The dealership were told by the garage that the car was perfect when it arrived in and I must have caused the issues despite highlighting the steering issue from the start. It took a written letter laying out my rights that forced Raymond to accept liability. Raymond tried to say the garage operated as separate companies but seeing as they're in the same building, they work together and Raymond tells them what to do. The mechanic wasn't too happy with having to carry out the repairs, maybe because he said the car was perfect and I essentially stood up to him. At the end Raymond went with me on a final drive to ensure the car was ok and I thanked him for his work but I think he was glad to see the back of me. Also when I visited the garage during this dispute, Raymond was on holidays so I was talking to another gentleman and I overheard another couple complaining of an issue that was similar to mine so I wasn't an isolated case and I'm sure there are many more that aren't highlighted. The lesson I learned was not to buy a car in a rush and to make sure everything is to my satisfaction before handing over the full amount but I trusted Raymond when he said everything was ok. Despite all this, they are nice people to your face but then again they are salesmen and will do as little as possible if they can get away with it once they have your money. I would like to say though that compared to my other visits to dealerships, this one is more relaxed and Raymond is a very good salesman. I never felt any pressure to buy.
