I recently enquired about a Vauxhall Mokka (reg EJ65ARX) listed on Autotrader and spoke with Conrad at the dealership. As a serious buyer, I asked several questions about the vehicle before committing to travel. During our phone call, I sensed that Conrad was becoming frustrated with my questions, which made me uneasy but I decided to proceed. I made a 3 hour and 30-minute train journey (one way) from Windsor, Berkshire, to view the vehicle in person. Upon arrival, I was met with an unwelcoming reception — Conrad handed me the keys with minimal conversation and left me to inspect the vehicle alone. While the Engine Management Light was not illuminated, I brought my diagnostic machine to check for hidden faults. The following fault codes were identified: ECM (Engine Control Module) P0101 Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor performance P1101 Intake Air Flow System Performance EBCM (Engine Brake Control Module) C0800 (Control Module Power Circuit) PACM (Parking Assist Control Module) U0073 CAN Bus Communication B325 Control module Power Circuit I phoned my mechanic, who advised me to request a price reduction to account for the cost of repairs. When I brought this up with Conrad, his immediate response was, “So the vehicle is not for you.” He didn’t ask to see the fault codes or express surprise — suggesting he may have been aware of the issues beforehand. I asked to sit down and discuss the matter, but Conrad said he was too busy. 40 minutes later, he made time to talk. He eventually offered a small discount — but only if the car was sold without any warranty. This was a complete reversal from the original offer of a 3-month warranty and 30-day return policy. After speaking with the director, Conrad informed me that they were no longer willing to sell the vehicle to me because I had found the faults. Their justification was that they did not want to be liable — essentially implying that their warranty is meaningless if a buyer performs due diligence. To add to this, the vehicle was advertised as having undergone a “multi-point inspection”, but it clearly did not include any form of diagnostic scan, even though the dealership charges £84 for diagnostics when returning a car under warranty. I had no choice but to buy a return train ticket home for another and endure another 3 hours and 30 minute journey and £90 out of pocket. Conclusion If I hadn’t brought my own diagnostic tool and taken the initiative, I could have unknowingly purchased a vehicle with underlying faults, under the false impression that it had been properly inspected and came with a reliable warranty. This experience has been highly disappointing, and I would strongly urge any prospective buyers to perform their own checks before trusting advertised claims or warranties.
Simon Main from Autotrade Birmingham in response to Don't believe cars are checked
In response to this review, I am sorry you were not happy with your experience viewing our vehicles. It seems you had an issue with the information you received from your OBD diag machine. I am assuming from your review that you are not a motor mechanic, because you mentioned calling a mechanic for information. If the car does not have any faults or issues or warning lights when we test the car, we do not "clear" the historical codes from the ECU, because these codes can be helpful for future reference. These codes do not mean the car has a fault. Every car of this age will have historical codes in the ECU, unless they have been cleared out. I am not sure as to what you are referring, mentioning a 3 month warranty and a 30 day return policy. What we offer is a 30 day no quibble, fully inclusive, return to dealer warranty, or a 6 month or 12 month extended warranty option. At the time of your visit, and in fact on most days, we are very busy, so waiting around for 40 minutes is not uncommon. But I am sure you used the 40 minutes to look around and check over the vehicle you came to see at your leisure, without any interference or harrassment, which most people prefer. You really wouldn't want to buy a car from somewhere without customers, or with salesman following you around and badgering you. We sell 1000+ used cars every year, and have fanatastic reviews from our loyal customers. It seems you clearly wanted to buy the car, because you made offers, and wanted discounts. This would indicate that the car was in good condition and didn't have any issues preventing you from buying the car. We price our cars very fairly, so everyone gets a great deal. We do not need to discount our cars because we are not over priced. Every vehicle we sell comes with a 30 day "no quibble" Guarantee which covers any fault on the car. If the car has a fault, bring it back within 30 days and we will fix it, couldn't be easier.
Will definitely be recommending to anyone looking for a car. Answered any questions I had with no bother and an overall very good experience. Very pleased!
I have shown interest towards one vehicle listed and got in touch with Stuart who instead of being couteous of answering started behaving rude and using abusive words which is shocker to see from such a firm. I would recommend the Autotrade to give some training to employee to behave in decent manner. We are also not contacting to waste yours and ours time instead expecting some patience and decency. Mr. Stuart thinks asking for price reduction or enquiring for anything is stupidity and for that he even charges extra price then what is listed.

Good service until there’s a problem they are unable to fix and then they refuse to help. Purchased a used car which had several issues noticed during the drive home and subsequent inspection that couldn’t be spotted on a test drive. They tried to fix but couldn’t, however a specialist spotted the fault immediately. Now the company are refusing to acknowledge the issue claiming it wasn’t there at purchase despite being told within 2 days and the consumer rights act stating the onus is on them to prove it wasn’t within the first 6 months. Attempting to scare off with incorrect legal emails. I would avoid unless you like stress. It’s a shame companies like this ruin the reputation of the motor industry.

I called AutoTrade to enquire about 3 cars I wanted to see, to check if they were still available (which they were) and drove an hour just to see them. I got to the dealership, reached the reception and enquired about the cars. A blasé attendant said they were out and that I could go check the cars, and that someone would be there shortly. No one showed up even though there were no other clients. I felt so disappointed and angry and just left after 10 minutes walking around. Would never deal with them. Maybe it was because I was interested in the cheaper cars.

This is the second car I've bought from them and that's because of the level of service received with my first one. This one had an issue with rear wipers but they fixed it straightaway, no problem. They also put new discs and pads on it so really happy with the service at Autotrade they couldn't do enough. Very good - five star
