Review We are so disappointed to be writing this review but have exhausted all avenues with Group 1 Toyota in Basingstoke after buying a used car from them. We have unfortunately had an awful experience with them and would certainly warn future used car customers to be very careful and do their homework before purchase. Personally I would totally avoid them. We bought a used Toyota (2017) Aygo from them in November 2024. Initially the sales process was good and we were pleased and confident with our purchase. We had been very nervous about buying a used car and purposefully chose Toyota to take away any risks that might be associated from buying from a private seller or unverified dealer. We paid in cash which was a lot of money to us but were reassured by the 145 point check we were assured had been carried out to make sure the car was safe and fit for purpose and that we had 3 years left on the 10 year warranty if we continued to have it serviced by Toyota which was well sold by them and a big draw us. 9 months later we took the car for its MOT and full service (in Trowbridge which was much closer to us than Basingstoke which is some distance from us) and it failed needing both suspension arms and ARB links replacing. With the full service and work we paid just under £1050 within 9 months of owning it. Not only that but we were told that the brake pads were unevenly worn and needed replacing and investigation to see why that was causing that at a minimum cost of £315 and that the clutch was running high and could need replacing in the near future at a cost of £900, a total cost of over £2200 for a car that cost us just over £7k. To say we were absolutely gutted is an understatement. The service advisor in Trowbridge was concerned we had only owned the car for 9 months, it had a low mileage and we had not added much in 9 months or done anything to cause such wear. He advised us to go back to Basingstoke to take it up with them. Then began 4 months of being ignored, passed on from Basingstoke with not so much as a sorry to ‘after service care’ then to customer general complaints, and finally back to Basingstoke when the manager eventually called me to chat through what had happened - this was about 4 months after our original email to the sales team there. I asked him if it was acceptable to buy a used car and 9 months later spend £2200 on work and he said no. But we were told that it is a risk of buying used cars, nothing was covered by the warranty, interestingly they had lost the original 145 check so we couldn’t see it (he offered to try and find it and email it to me but that was nearly 6 weeks ago now) and that Trowbridge were just trying to ‘up sell’ us work so basically bad mouthing Toyota colleagues there. He said he would arrange to speak to their service team to see if we could bring it in but that was six weeks ago now and have heard nothing. We feel totally helpless and have sadly resigned ourselves to just having to sort it. Please be warned! If you are buying a used car from them, ask to see the 145 point check if they will let you and if they won’t - leave! (we looked through the previous MOTs and there was nothing) and that any aftercare and customer service is a massive fight or basically 0 after you have driven that car off the forecourt. We had an amazing experience with Trust Ford 6 years ago when we bought a used C max from them which is still going strong at 12 years ago and has barely had anything to do since we purchased it. My biggest regret is that we didn’t just go back to them.
