Had dreadful time with Selected Cars. Sells faulty car and then do all they could to make things difficult. Worst garage ever. The owner is an arrogant man.

I appreciate things can go wrong with used cars. The Volvo I bought from Selected Cars in Inverness had an intermittent fault and a few silly little things. Given how unreliable the Volvo was, they did at least provide me with a courtesy car. An Astra, which I felt should have been much less than the Volvo. Anyways, as I was desperately in need of a car for my work. I agreed to accept the Astra over the Volvo. I recieved no money back, the Astra had gear problems, which they agreed to take in and fix. I assumed under warranty. Nope, I never did see a warranty for either car. They took the money they owed me from the difference in sale between the Volvo and Astra, then charged me even more to get my Astra back from their choice if garage. They told the garage owner not to release my car without the payment, so basically theft, lying and deciept to get even more money out of a single, working mother. Please, do not go near these people Ever!!!

Staff from Selected Cars in response to Issues with Volvo and the replacement

Dear Luthian T Lark, thank you for your review. This review provides us an opportunity to communicate with you, something we have been really strugging so very hard to do, as having called you many many times, and having left numerous messages for you to call us, you have failed to reply and return the V5 and documentation for the Volvo C30. We have read through your comments, and we are completely at a loss! There is nothing in your review that even closely resembles the truth. This is not even the 3rd cousin twice removed from the truth. This is obviously just an attempt to sabotage a small businesses' reputatation. To sum up the sequence of events (the real facts):- - you called us to say that there was an issue with the lovely Volvo you purchased. Apart from a lack of fuel, we could find no issue. - as it would be Monday morning before a garage could fully investigate the alleged issue, and the earliest the car could be fully checked, in order that you would not be inconvenienced, we immediately offered you and provided you with a much newer courtesy vehicle as it was late one Friday afternoon, and we subsequently taxed a suitable car for you (at our expense). - you called us and informed us that this much newer Vauxhall Astra was much more to your liking and much more suitable for you, and with a young child as it was a 5 door hatchback, you found it much more practical and comfortable than a 3 door sports coupe. You requested an exchange and with our customary customer service, we informed you we would be very happy to arrange an exchange. At no time did we try to persuade you to accept the Astra instead of the Volvo. This was at your suggestion entirely. (incidentally, I feel that a new edition Ferrari "should be" much less than my Renault Clio.....but much to my dismay, that's not how things work) - we had discussed in detail with you that the even though the Vauxhall Astra was newer, lower mileage, and more valuable than the Volvo, we would refund the Volvo in full, and leaving you with a small refund due, upon receipt of the Volvo spare key, V5, documents etc. however, the Volvo was returned with badly kerb damaged alloy wheels, missing badges and decals etc. At this point the refund due to you was £250. - Several months later, even though outwith the warranty period, you called us to say that there was an issue with the Astra and you had broken down in Elgin. We immediately contacted a recovery service in order to collect the Astra and have the issue investigated at one of the service providers we use, You informed us that this was not an urgent matter, that you could make alternative arrangements and that you would be in touch in due course. Over the next couple of days we called you without response, Almost 2 weeks later you called us to say that the car was still in Elgin and could we arrange a garage to take a look. You informed us that the car had been parked up at a friends premises, that you hadn't needed the car but now it was becoming more urgent. We immeditately contacted a workshop we know and they could look at the car straight away. Upon arrival, the workshop found several empty motor factor boxes, damaged parts etc lying in the passenger footwell. Despite your repeated assurances that no-one had dont anything to the car, further investigation revealed the full story. The car hadn't really been "parked at a friends premises" at all, had it Lithian? but had been been worked on by someone with (we would guess) very little mechanical knowledge, and various parts had been attempted to be replaced and damaged as a result of this lack of nowledge. The reputable workshop we recommended repaired the car efficiently and correctly, and the credit still on file (£250) was contributed towards the repair bill. You were informed fully about this and you only paid the balance. This was entirely with your agreement. - Contrary to your comments, we did not charge you anything, and we did not tell the garage owner "not to release the car"....this was an entirely independent garage. We have many, many customers whom are single working mothers AND fathers, and we have always bent over backwards to provide an unparalleled level of service....but this review you have left is completely unfounded, untrue, and malicious in it's entirety. Accusations of "Theft...Lying....Deceipt..."??.....this really says a lot more about you than it does about us Luthian.

I purchased a 2009 Mini Cooper S. I was trading in my old car for which they offered me a couple hundred pounds, we had arranged a date for them to view my car prior to taking it and we waited for 2 hours outside in the rain and they never showed up. The company owner used aggressive sales tactics claiming the car was booked up for test drives and that I should put a £500 deposit that is non-refundable. They promised to have it all valeted for collection but when I came to pick the car up the car was still filthy inside. They didn’t give me the vehicle manual or the car’s service history but at the time I was too excited with my new purchase to question it. They had put the car through an MOT prior to pick up. Instantly we realised the sun roof didn’t work but we thought that wasn’t a huge problem. A week after I had purchased the car the brakes stopped working. I called out a mechanic who told me the servo had gone, the car had numerous fault codes and had voltage issues. I then called Selected Cars to tell them the problems my car was having, the owner was incredibly rude said it was all lies and to bring the car up to them to have them look. I then called the AA to inspect the car and tow it to the nearest garage to have it undergo a full diagnostics test and inspection. The AA mechanic agreed the servo was faulty, the car should have never passed an MOT and to report this company to the ministry of transport for selling an unsafe car. The garage found all brake discs need replaced, rear callipers were binding, all tyres treads were close to or below legal limit. They quotes me £1300 of repairs for a £7k car I had bought a week or two prior. When I contacted the dealership with my evidence they claimed the only issue with the car was the brake leads needed fitted properly. I ended up going through a debit dispute with my bank to recoup the money for the car. Don’t buy from this dealership unless you’re looking for a death trap and terrible customer service, and even then you could probably find the same a lot cheaper elsewhere.

Robert McCall from Selected Cars in response to Sold a faulty vehicle

“totally unfounded review” We value all customer feedback and even criticisms – where constructive and honest, however, having investigated the claims made by Lauren Blackwood, we are struggling to attribute either description to almost anything in this post and her previous correspondence. . Firstly we pride ourselves on the levels of customer service we deliver and we adopt a very laid back and zero pressure sales approach. Customers can indeed secure the sale of a car by placing a deposit. We make it abundantly clear that deposits are non-refundable and even go so far as to advise customers NOT to place a deposit unless they are absolutely certain they want the car. As all our cars undergo a rigorous 83 point inspection carried out by independent professional technicians and in addition in your case the Mini passed an MOT just four days prior to you collecting it, I am extremely sceptical as to the dubiety of the alleged inspection you say you had carried out. Especially as we have yet to receive a copy of the report having requested it on several occasions. On obtaining a full refund and returning the car to us, minus the spare key and minus the V5 incurring us further costs of £267.88 to replace, we had the car re inspected. It comes as no great surprise that NOT ONE of the alleged issues or faults you refer to could be replicated or established, NOT ONE!! - All tyres had tread depths of 4.5 mm and above. Brand new tyres of similar make and model are between 7-8 mm. The legal limit is 1.6mm. - The electric sunroof worked perfectly. - On road test the brakes performed to optimum efficiency and on physical inspection all discs and pads showed little sign of wear (brake pads were brand new at the time of collection) and none of the calipers were binding. - A full diagnostics check was carried out and there were no current fault codes present. Given these findings, if any party is to be reported to the Ministry Of Transport, perhaps it should be “the garage” that allegedly quoted you £1300 to carry out totally unnecessary repairs, however, we very much doubt that there was any garage, and very likely that there was no AA report, as we do believe that a qualified mechanic would have made the claims you made in your previous correspondence....claims such as "the timing belt was cracked". Lauren, the Mini Cooper S does not have a timing belt. A mechanic would have known that. On your signed customer order form an offer of £750 was made for your old trade in vehicle, so in all, a substantial amount more than the “couple of hundred pounds” you claim you were offered offered, and some £300 more than it's true worth. As we are open seven days a week I am somewhat baffled regarding the allegation that you had to wait for "two hours in the rain" to have your trade in vehicle appraised and valued or indeed why you even would? Although given your recollection of the trade in offer you were made versus the sum you claim you were offered, and coupled with the fact that you claim you paid "£7000" for a car that was actually £5995, then perhaps you have similar issues with time lines as you do with numeracy? ps. we would like to thank you for bringing this to our attention, there will be a demand sent to your home address for the cost of the replacement key and the replacement V5 fee. We do hope court action will not be necessary.

Bought a car from Selected Cars - numerous faults developed within days. Lied about the spec of the car and also lied about the service history (said it had fantastic history and turns out it has none. Terrible company to deal with - avoid at all costs. Use Horsepower cars in Inverness; they don't lie.

I purchased a 55 plate Mini for my daughter from Selected Cars in May. It was new in stock so was not valeted when we first viewed and it was pointed out that the vehicle had a defective exhaust. Following a test drive I noted a noise from the rear of the car. We also found that the remote central locking was barely operating, there was a small piece of trim detached from a window and a legacy hands-free kit was fitted (which I agreed to having removed when asked if that was my preference). Also, there was a small paintwork blemish on the tailgate which I requested be resprayed and this was agreed, though it meant that there would be no further negotiation on the asking price. The car was rectified mechanically, the tailgate repaired and a new MOT obtained for collection on or around the agreed sale date. So far, all very good. However, when I collected the car, the remote central locking was still poor, the trim had not been re-fitted and the unwanted hands-free kit was still in-situ. The mechanic tried to refit the window trim but damaged it requiring a new part to be ordered and the car returned for fitting. It became apparent after purchase that the air conditioning was also not working. This had either not been picked up during the advertised 83 point pre-sale inspection or not indicated to me. My remote central locking also ceased to work within 2 days of getting the vehicle home so I raised both of these issues with the Salesman when I returned for the window trim. I was informed that the air conditioning would have to be rectified at my expense but that a question would be raised with a Mini specialist regarding the central locking and the answer passed to me. No such reply was received from Selected despite a follow up email from me. Then, after approx. 2 months the clutch system failed requiring an RAC callout. The RAC engineer was able to effect a temporary repair to what he detailed as a ‘corroded hydraulic clip’ but that the car required an immediate permanent repair and system bleed as air had entered the system. I called Selected Cars to have the repair completed under warranty, sent a copy of the RAC report to them and delivered the car to Inverness as instructed. However, I was told by Selected Cars after a 2 day inspection (at an independent garage) that the Clutch was not a Warranty item and was given a quote for £94 for repair. I was offered a 20% ‘gesture of goodwill’ which I declined, recovered the car and had the repair carried out locally. I feel overall that the after-sales service on this purchase has not been to a standard I would expect and have contacted the Selected salesman to air my grievances. Regarding the remote central locking and air conditioning it was inferred in his response that it is unreasonable to expect these systems to be checked/working/repaired on older vehicles: “We can not however prepare cars for the few customers who think the car should behave as new, especially when it comes to cosmetic and or convenience/luxury items which come under routine maintenance.” Perhaps my expectations are too high? I certainly don’t expect a 10+ year old car to not have signs of use commensurate with age/mileage but neither do I expect to purchase a car from any dealer, irrespective of the vehicle’s age, with unserviceable systems not being repaired or at least being pointed out as such. The clutch issue is still somewhat of a mystery to me. Selected Cars issue a ‘Parts and Labour Warranty’ at point of sale. The warranty was not discussed (besides a comment on our original visit to say it could be extended) and it was only when I looked at the warranty later I noticed it was for a maximum claim limit of £100! The Warranty lists quite comprehensively the systems and individual components covered including: “Your Formula Warranty covers the following components against mechanical or electrical breakdown…….Clutch – Clutch Cover, clutch fork and pivot, plate, master cylinder, slave cylinder and thrust bearing.” This appears to me to be fairly comprehensive cover of the Clutch system in its entirety and although my particular failure was specifically of a clip on one of the system parts it apparently did not meet the criteria for a claim, Selected Cars stating – “the clutch is not covered under warranty”. Based on my experience I could not recommend using Selected Cars unless you scan manage your expectations in line with their policies and product.

Cathel I Fraser in response to In The End - Disappointed

Thanks for sharing. I know someone with a similar but more serious case. I expect he'll post his own review at some point soon and no doubt wishes he'd read your review before he bought from Selected Cars. His car simply isn't fit for purpose. Issues were raised pre-sale and not addressed despite promises to the contrary. After they had his money, they just didn't want to know. Prevarication and stonewalling was the order of the day. It was so at odds with their projected website image, it was simply staggering. Every good businessman knows that bad testimonials have a far more damaging and extensive impact than any positive impact from good testimonials. The public needs to know these customer experiences and Selected Cars needs to be careful that they don't up being a newspaper story one of these days.
