Please be very careful when buying from Robert & Steve. Check everything thoroughly before parting with any money. Make sure there are 2 keys because if not despite many promises you’ll need to buy at a cost in our case £400 .check under mats as holes in carpet are not repairable and make sure the seats etc are clean. We learnt the hard way !! Be warned of these very smiling friendly twosome
robert wray from The Small Auto Company in response to Not great service
Thank you Mary for taking the time to share your experience of your purchase from us. It is hugely disappointing to read this review after we had tried so hard to locate a second key from the previous owner. Unfortunately we always try to supply 2 keys with all our cars, but occasionally customers forget or lose a key and it is not forwarded to us. Unfortunately, as a business, we can not afford to replace every key. At no point during the purchase of the vehicle did you ever say how important a second key was. When you test drove the car, we gave you the key and during the signing of the purchase order, the key was on the desk. At no point did we try to deceive or imply that the car had a second key. On the day of collection we prepared the car for you after MOT, service and re-valet, and handed the car to you. At no point was the spare key raised as a problem. You then contacted us days after to ask about the key, at which point we explained that not all used cars come with two keys, but we would endeavour to contact the previous owner, just in case they had forgotten to hand it back when returning the car to Motability. This was done via post after you had received your new log book (V5) from DVLA, as proof of ownership would be required. Unfortunately, there was no reply. We then rang all the dealers and key-cutting companies we knew and got you a competitive price at trade for a spare key, which you chose not to accept. We are very sorry that this successful deal has motivated you to leave a negative review, but unfortunately used cars often come without spare keys. Whilst we always endeavour to go above and beyond for our customers, the cost of replacing every missing spare key across our stock would unfortunately be unfeasible from a business perspective. We feel that we were open and honest throughout our interaction with you, and did all we could to try and resolve your concerns after the purchase was made. We regret that this issue has left you unsatisfied, and hope that this response goes some way to explaining our position.
I recently bought a fantastic little corsa automatic from Robert and the team. It’s my third time buying from the small auto company in 15 years, and I’m happy to say their level of service and professionalism is just as good as ever. Highly recommend a visit to these chaps if you value good customer service, value for money and a good honest chat in between!

Robert wray from The Small Auto Company in response to Lovely experience once again
Hi Euan it was a pleasure to catch up with you and your family, as always it was great to locate and find you your new car and my nephew loves your old car . Keep safe and thanks for taking the time to write a review . Robert and the team 🙏👍
I found Steve to be friendly and welcoming to begin with but my opinion has soon changed since. I bought a Citroen C4 in December 2021. Upon test driving, the car made a very faint knocking noise, barely noticeable, but I mentioned the noise to Steven anyway and was told “It’ll go away on its own after being driven for a little while because the car has been sitting around for a few months”. He also went on to explain that the car came with 3 months warranty which would cover ANY issues and that if I did have any problems that I could take it to a local garage and the warranty would cover it. However, despite the noise, I trusted him with his advice and went on to buy it. A few weeks later the knocking noise was still there and was gradually getting louder, followed by a message on my dashboard “Engine fault, repair needed” (that turned out to be a problem with the battery) I called Steven and explained. I was told to take it to a local garage, in which I did. Got a report back from the garage and all together it was a total of over £600 worth of repairs. I had also taken the car to another 2 garages in that time and each had found identical problems. Once again I called Steven to explain that I have bought a car that needs a lot of work doing and that I shouldn’t be paying for the repairs because I’d only had the car a few weeks and it would be unfair to do so considering I’ve spent over £4000 on a car that needs so much work. He told me that I had: 1: Caused the problems myself through wear and tear. 2: That I would need to pay for the repairs and that there was nothing he could do. 3: The garages were “finding problems” to get money out of me. I am still so SO angry that he blamed me for months/years of disrepair that were already present (without realising, silly me, my mistake🙄 This is my first car so I am a bit of a novice 😂) before I bought the car. There were no advisory notes on the car, despite all the work that needed doing. Had I known it needed so much work I would’ve never bought the car. Steven told me that they don’t put advisory notes on their cars if they need repairs because they, and I quote “carry out repairs ourselves” I had spoken to various garages & citizens advice and was told near enough the same thing by each person that I shouldn’t have to pay for the repairs and that I could not have caused that amount of damage to the car in such a short space of time. After emailing, because Steve ignored most of my calls (guilty because he knew the car had problems in the first place?), he finally reluctantly agreed to have the car fixed of some of the problems. (corroded break discs and a slow puncture in the front tire) We’re in June and since then I have had a few extra repairs done to the car. It is totally clear that they don’t check or carry out any repairs that need doing to cars they sell. In my own honest opinion, it would be for anyone to keep well away from this “automatic specialist” dealership.

Thank you Katy for taking the time to write a review, we as a business take all feed back extremely seriously and negative feed back helps us identify how we can do things better. I am concerned about your experience and would like to offer our view on this , using the facts at hand. Prior to you taking delivery of your new car we agreed to put a fresh 12 months mot on the car, giving you peace of mind that at the point you took delivery of your car it was free of any issues, under a ministry of transport inspection ( MOT ).we use a Bosch safety center, WITH A 5 STAR RATING for all our pre delivery work and insist that there be no advisory notes and any work identified under that we be carried out at our expense prior to collection , we work with the AA for warranty issues going forward. You contacted us on the 25 th of January saying you had an issue with a light on the dashboard, we asked you to take the car to local garage as you are a considerable distance from ourselves and thought this would be more convenient for yourself with the minimum impact, we explained that that if it was a mechanical failure it would be covered under the warranty. you chose to take the car to a citreon main dealer and they diagnosed brake issues along with a coil pack failure and quoted a ridiculous fee to repair, you then contacted ourselves to report brake issues with the car and coil pack issue. this was a complete surprise to ourselves as we had just requested a 12 months mot and felt the mot station should reinspect the car, we provided a loan car for you and you agreed to returned the car, we were concerned that a a 5 star garage had made an error and as we use them all the time and wanted to confirm the car was safe to drive and road worthy. the garage re inspected the car and found again no issues with the brakes that would cause the car to fail its mot, we also made a claim for the coil with no expense to you, in addition we asked the garage to replace the front brakes discs and pads as a gesture of goodwill, plus repair a slow puncture which was not on the car when sold. so i am at a loss to see why you rate us so poorly, considering we repaired your car and did additional work that did not need doing , to show our appreciation for your custom. we never ignored any contact or implied that a 10 year old car was not free of wear and tear, but you bought a great value car and we could not have tried harder to resolve your issues. no one blamed you for issues, we just resolved the problem, we have had no contact with you since and 7 months and at the point of you recollecting the car expressed you appreciation and thanked us for sorting it all out, .
Dealing with Stephen from start to finish was a pleasure. Very professional, nothing, too much trouble and the handover was first class. Would highly recommend this company.
Had a really good experience with this company. Steph3n couldn’t have been more helpful and kind. A good honest, reliable company. They will do their best for you.

The small auto company sourced us two cars! A Suzuki Swift and a Peugeot Partner WAV. The communication and service was brilliant! A lot of dealers could learn a lot from these guys! Felt at ease straight away and also didn’t feel pressured into anything. Knew their cars well and was an overall pleasure to deal with! And wouldn’t hesitate to buy from this garage again. Thanks Guys!

robert wray from The Small Auto Company in response to Rip Off Merchant
Really sorry to read your review, my understanding is that we are supporting you with our national warranty and the car is booked in for investigation and repair at your chosen garage, local to you, we support all our customers and despite your dissatisfaction at this moment in time, I hope we can resolve this issue and you can enjoy the car . We do sell used cars and it is true occasionally things go wrong, we give all our cars a national warranty for this very reason. i hope we can prove your feelings towards ourselves wrong and resolve this issue.
Gary Smith in response to Rip Off Merchant
I have read your response but at this moment I am still of the observation that I was ripped off. sold a car that I was told had been serviced but when the car went into ford 2days after buying it i was told the brakes and discs were so badly worn and that the car cannot be driven until they are changed another 200+ i had to spend yet i was told the car was serviced if you had serviced the car properly you would have seen that and also your company knew the car had a dodgy gearbox that after a wk started playing up I requested my money back and either way it will be sorted wether in court or out you just simply cannot dupe people out of their hard earned cash so you can get a quick fix of a cash injection I have been stranded without a car from the 1st wk of buying it which is now into the 5th wk and you have done nothing to help me resolve this is that fair? all I keep hearing is warranty warranty you knew the car was dodgy and should have used your national warranty to fix it before putting it up for sale Fullstop
Gary Smith in response to Rip Off Merchant
You offered a warranty that is crap only wanted to pay a 1/4 towards the repair of the vehicle absolute joke. I Finally have my money back from this sad man at the helm I am very disappointed in Steves attitude & conduct during the whole of this saga he has been nothing short of condescending and had been trying to force me to remove my review so he can continue to look good & rip people off but I refuse to remove it I must make people aware of untrustworthy people like him nobody has to follow my advise but if you want an opinion then mines is too steer clear of this Company too much problems not good enough solutions
robert wray from The Small Auto Company in response to Rip Off Merchant
This customer is clearly not happy with our attempt to resolve the issue with the car , we have given him a full refund and despite this continues to try tarnish 15 years of quality service to old and new customers, he has chosen to take a personal attack on one of my staff, who has been in the industry for over 40 years. i hope his review can be seen for what it is. he has been abusive on the phone and clearly wants to vent his anger, despite doing everything possible to resolve a problem. we will continue to serve our customers and clearly our actions display a professional approach to an unhappy customer.
